Adults have a wingspan of about 15 to 24 mm and show wavy patterns on their forewings and grey hindwings often tipped with orange. The larvae live inside rolled leaves of fruit plants such as raspberry and cultivated rose, where they feed and can harm the plants. Moths are on the wing from May to August, pupate in April to May, and the species overwinters as an egg.

How to recognize it

Forewings have a sinuate, vertical termen. Females show an irregular light-brown costal fold that may be reddish and darker-streaked. A dorsal spot is present near the wing base. The front edge of the central fascia is wavy. A faint costal patch bears a broken darker brown line; females may lack it and have some dark terminal marks. Hindwings are grey, with the apex often showing orange.

How this page works

This is one bug's fact sheet. The colored box at the top says whether it is dangerous. Sections below cover how to recognize it, whether it is a pest, and how to deal with it. The US map shows which states have records; tap a state to see other bugs there.

Every fact on Bug FAQ comes from a named source (university extension sites, government agencies, GBIF, iNaturalist, Wikipedia). The source is linked next to each section. If we have no source for something, we leave it out.
