Alkali bees are about two-thirds the size of honeybees and have black with metallic bands on their abdomen; males have white faces while females have a rarely used stinger. Females collect pollen and nectar to make a pollen ball, lay an egg on it, and the larva eats the ball before entering diapause; development from egg to adult takes about 11-12 days.

Life cycle

After the egg is laid on the pollen ball, it hatches in three to four days and the larva eats the ball. When the pollen is consumed, the larva becomes a prepupa, defecates, and then enters diapause. The whole development from egg to adult takes about 11 to 12 days in the wild.

How this page works

This is one bug's fact sheet. The colored box at the top says whether it is dangerous. Sections below cover how to recognize it, whether it is a pest, and how to deal with it. The US map shows which states have records; tap a state to see other bugs there.

Every fact on Bug FAQ comes from a named source (university extension sites, government agencies, GBIF, iNaturalist, Wikipedia). The source is linked next to each section. If we have no source for something, we leave it out.
