Southern meat ants are medium to large ants, 6 to 12 mm long, with queens up to about 13 mm. They have a dark-bluish body, a red head, and iridescent workers that can show green, blue, or purple hues. These ants build large, oval mounds with many entrances in warm open areas and can form networks of satellite nests linked by trails.

Is it a pest in the house?

They can become pests in urban areas and are hard to eradicate, though they also help disperse many plant seeds and support other insects.

Does it bite or sting?

Various predators such as echidnas, birds, blind snakes, and spiders eat these ants.

How to get rid of it

When a nest is removed, nearby satellite nests may appear and can detach from the original colony. A colony is considered mature when it has at least 12 entrance holes; fewer indicates an immature nest.

Where it lives

They live in open, warm sites, building large oval mounds that have many entrance holes. Colonies can spread to multiple satellite nests that are connected by defined trails.

What it eats

They forage on trees for honeydew and nectar, capture insects, and collect animal remains, often forming symbiotic relationships with other insects.

Life cycle

A queen’s ovaries mature in about four weeks, after which she lays roughly 20 eggs that develop into larvae within a month. From egg to adult takes one to two months.

How this page works

This is one bug's fact sheet. The colored box at the top says whether it is dangerous. Sections below cover how to recognize it, whether it is a pest, and how to deal with it. The US map shows which states have records; tap a state to see other bugs there.

Every fact on Bug FAQ comes from a named source (university extension sites, government agencies, GBIF, iNaturalist, Wikipedia). The source is linked next to each section. If we have no source for something, we leave it out.
