The small brown bush ant is brown overall, with a slightly darker abdomen and lighter legs; males are a yellow-brown, more slender form with a small head and large eyes. Workers are 2.9 to 3.5 mm long, reproductive females 4.6 to 6 mm, and males are a bit smaller than workers. It lives throughout New Zealand’s forests and nearby open areas, and it feeds on small arthropods, honeydew from scale insects, and adjusts its diet to get missing nutrients.

How this page works

This is one bug's fact sheet. The colored box at the top says whether it is dangerous. Sections below cover how to recognize it, whether it is a pest, and how to deal with it. The US map shows which states have records; tap a state to see other bugs there.

Every fact on Bug FAQ comes from a named source (university extension sites, government agencies, GBIF, iNaturalist, Wikipedia). The source is linked next to each section. If we have no source for something, we leave it out.
