Caterpillars grow to about 2.5 cm and are green with a white line or darker with a black stripe along the back. Adults have a wingspan of 2.5 to 3.5 cm and emerge in the fall to lay eggs on hardwood trees. The larvae feed on many deciduous trees such as elm, ash, and maple, causing serious defoliation in spring.

Is it a pest in the house?

The looping caterpillars can cause major defoliation of new spring growth on many tree species. If trees lose foliage two years in a row, especially when stressed by drought, they may die.

How to get rid of it

Birds and ground beetles such as Calosoma frigidum naturally prey on the caterpillars.

How this page works

This is one bug's fact sheet. The colored box at the top says whether it is dangerous. Sections below cover how to recognize it, whether it is a pest, and how to deal with it. The US map shows which states have records; tap a state to see other bugs there.

Every fact on Bug FAQ comes from a named source (university extension sites, government agencies, GBIF, iNaturalist, Wikipedia). The source is linked next to each section. If we have no source for something, we leave it out.
