The brown-hooded cockroach (Cryptocercus punctulatus) is a wingless, brown to black insect about 23 to 30 mm long that lives its whole life inside moist dead logs. It feeds on the wood of those logs, aided by unique gut flagellates that break down cellulose, and it takes 5 to 6 years to reach reproductive maturity, producing about 73 eggs in a single breeding episode. The species is native to the eastern United States, especially the Appalachian region of western Virginia and Pennsylvania.

How this page works

This is one bug's fact sheet. The colored box at the top says whether it is dangerous. Sections below cover how to recognize it, whether it is a pest, and how to deal with it. The US map shows which states have records; tap a state to see other bugs there.

Every fact on Bug FAQ comes from a named source (university extension sites, government agencies, GBIF, iNaturalist, Wikipedia). The source is linked next to each section. If we have no source for something, we leave it out.
